Jonakirche Lohausen, Niederrheinstraße
In the course of the increased influx of Protestant parishioners in Lohausen, a parish hall with a kindergarten was built in 1952 on the property at Niederrheinstraße 128 / corner of Lantzallee, which had already been acquired in 1927.
The necessary expansion of the kindergarten and the increased involvement in children's and youth work led to the conversion and extension of the parish hall into a day care centre (lower floor) with youth and multi-purpose rooms (upper floor) in 1989. The long-standing wish for a "proper" worship space was fulfilled by the construction of the Jonah Church as a "multi-purpose church building".
The name "Jonah" church is reminiscent of the equally youthful and modern Old Testament prophet, Jonah, who wanted to "get rid of God". He set out for Spain (Tarsis, opposite Mallorca), but surprisingly finds himself in the "God-distance" of the big and cosmopolitan city of Nineveh. This story makes it clear what our church wants to be for people today, or what it wants to become again and again: a place where one can (re)discover God, seek him and find him.
The Jonakirche is often used for services with a special form or with modern design elements.
This is made possible by the flexible room layout (the church can be extended both to the back and to the side), the foyer inviting people to celebrate and eat together, the beautifully designed entrance area, the variable seating and the almost square shape of the interior.
Musically, the focus is on modern spiritual songs, worship songs, gospel and Taizé chants.
Liturgically, the active participation of all age groups is encouraged whenever possible. Themed services and services for special occasions are balanced with classical sermon services.
The concern for a lively, creative togetherness for the glory of God and the good of the people is also supported by the numerous offers, projects and groups that are carried out in the parish hall and the children's day care centre during the week.
